Running Feet (RFT) to Square Feet: How It's Actually Used

Running feet — often written RFT — is how a surprising amount of construction and joinery work gets measured and billed: countertops, skirting, railings, modular kitchen units, curtains. It confuses people because it looks like it should convert straight into square feet, and it doesn’t. Running feet is a length. To turn it into square feet, you need one more number: the width.

What “running feet” means
Running feet is the length of an item measured along its run, ignoring width and thickness. A 20-foot stretch of countertop is 20 running feet whether the counter is 2 feet deep or 3. It’s the same idea as linear feet — the two terms are interchangeable — and it’s especially common in construction estimating in India and in commercial joinery anywhere.
The reason it exists is that a lot of building components are long and thin, made to a standard width or profile. For those, the length is the only measurement that varies, so pricing by length is simpler than pricing by area.
Running feet to square feet: bring in the width
The conversion is one multiplication, once you know the width in feet:
running feet × width (in feet) = square feet
A 20-running-foot countertop that’s 2 feet deep covers 20 × 2 = 40 square feet. The same 20 running feet at 2.5 feet deep is 50 square feet. The running length didn’t change; the area did, because the piece got wider. That’s exactly why running feet can’t become square feet on its own — the width is doing half the work. Notice the pattern: long, thin, standard-width things are quoted by running feet, while broad surfaces — floors, walls, ceilings — are quoted by square feet. When something has a fixed width, its length tells you everything, so that’s what gets measured.
When running feet is the right unit — and when it isn’t
Use running feet when the width is fixed and only the length matters: trim, railing, counters, pipe, molding. Use square feet when you’re covering an open surface where both dimensions vary: flooring, tiling, painting, turf.
The trouble starts when you compare a quote in running feet against one in square feet, or against a price per square meter, without converting. A counter at “$X per running foot” and a slab at “$Y per square foot” can’t be compared until you fold the depth into the running-foot price. Always convert both to the same unit before you judge which is cheaper.
