How to read this room size chart

Every row is a rectangular room quoted the way people describe them — 10x12, 12x15, 20x20 — with the square footage worked out by multiplying the two sides. A 12 × 15 ft room is 180 square feet; a 20 × 20 ft room is 400. Each dimension has its own page showing the room drawn to scale, converted into square metres, square yards and acres, and costed out in flooring, tile, paint, carpet, drywall and hardwood.

What counts as a normal room size

Sizes cluster by function rather than by taste. A single bedroom is typically 10 × 10 to 12 × 12, a primary bedroom 12 × 15 to 14 × 16, and a standard US bedroom needs to be at least 70 square feet with no dimension under 7 ft to count as a bedroom at all. Living rooms usually run 12 × 18 to 16 × 20, a one-car garage is around 12 × 20 and a two-car garage 20 × 20, and a workshop or shop building is commonly 24 × 30 or 30 × 40.

What the "what fits" figures mean

Each room page counts how many beds, cars, desks or tables physically fit, laid as a plain grid in whichever direction packs more in, with no walkways and no diagonal placement. Treat those counts as a floor rather than a ceiling: they tell you the room is large enough, not that the layout would be comfortable. A usable room generally wants 30 to 36 inches of clearance on at least one side of each piece of furniture.

For a room that is not a plain rectangle, use the L-shape calculator or pick another shape from the calculator index. To add several rooms into one house total, use the multi-room calculator.
